Abstract
In 2012, we interviewed over thirty fishermen fromthe province ofCadiz,asking them aboutthe namesthey use for items related to the sea, using atraditional method known as “Words and Things”. Fromthe 682 vocablesdocumented, twelve areArabisms: albitana, alcatruz, almadraba, arráez, atalaya, atarraya, falucho, jábega, jareta, safina, salabarandzafar. In this article we will study eight:albitana,alcatruz, arráez, atalaya, atarraya, falucho, jábegaandjareta. We will be analyzing them, firstly, by specifying the informant thatoffered the arabismas a response, as well as the location where the responsewas documented. Secondly,we will givemeaningsand spellingvariants. Thirdly,wewill address etymologicalaspects. Finally, we will perform a morphologic and semantic analysiswith the aimof demonstratingpossible changes in category or meaning, and thus determine the causes and effects fortheirsemantic change.
